 In this week’s athlete profile we meet the fabulous Suzy Madge. Suzy’s a record-breaking ski mountaineer and adventurer – and she knows Brad Pitt (well, almost). Here’s more…
Name: Suzy Madge
Age: 38
What’s your sport? Ski mountaineering, adventurer, athlete.
What’s your next big challenge? Sailing and ski mountaineering in Antarctica next December.
How did you get in to your sport?
Worked as the laziest chalet host in the Alps to learn to ski (always on the slopes by 9.30am), then got obsessed with skiing powder and realised that I had to walk to get the fluffiest stuff. Got into altitude walking after smashing my collarbone kitesurfing (couldn't do any sport for six months), and then during a grumpy clamber down a 7,000m mountain had an epiphany to ski big mountains.
 …And why should everyone else?
Someone once said to me that ski mountaineering’s 'God's chosen sport' and 'the most fun you can ever have with you clothes on' – you can't say fairer than that.
What training do you have to put in?
I don't really see anything I do as 'training' but I run, do pilates and upper body weights four times a week, and get on my mountain bike, windsurf, kitesurf and climb whenever possible.
Do you have any advice for budding ski mountaineers?
Go on a course with someone like Plas y Brenin/Mountain Tracks to learn about the techniques for skinning and kick turns as doing these properly saves loads of energy, and glacier travel and avalanches as this saves lives. Useful.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you while doing your chosen sport?
Bumping into Brad Pitt in morocco at the end of the Marathon Des Sables Ultra Marathon having not washed for a week. Can you imagine the shame?
