If anyone tells you that you have to break the bank to buy quality lightweight and packable kit, tell them they’re wrong and use the Apollo as evidence.
The Apollo uses a 750 fill down in stitch through chambers and, to help protect this in the wet, there’s a weather-resistant outer with a water-resistant finish. It’ll stand up to a brief shower but don’t bank on it in a downpour.
The Apollo comes with its own stuff sack and you’ll be hard pushed to find an insulated jacket that packs down smaller than this (a little bit smaller than a kitchen roll). As well as this tiny pack size the jacket weighs in at a very light 416g – the second lightest in this test. Combine the two together and the Apollo is looking like a great choice for a lightweight jacket to throw in your pack while hiking. It’s not the warmest jacket out there but it’ll do the job as a throw-over if you stop for a sarnie or as a mid-layer in colder conditions. It’s also got two zipped hand warmer pockets for extra warmth.
All in all the Apollo is an impressive piece of gear for the price (and you can get it even cheaper online). For £99.95 you get an insulated jacket that’ll be ideal for taking on hikes with you in cold-ish weather, but if you’re going to be in seriously cold places you might be better off looking for a warmer garment.
